Rating: Good Read
Timeless wraps up Gail Carrigerâs Soulless series with a bang and some great mystery. It may not have the perfect bow-tied ending that you would like, but she brought her story to a close well, and set herself up to keep exploring this world more with future books to come.
Picking up a few years after Heartless ends, Timeless tells the continuing tales of Alexia, Connall, and Lord Akeldama as they struggle to raise the precocious and unusual Prudence. As we learned at the end of Heartless, when Prudence touches a supernatural creatures she steals their supernaturalness, leaving them human and becoming herself whatever they were. She touches Lord Akeldama: she becomes a mini vampire and he a human man again. She touches her father: she becomes a wolf club, who is often still wearing a very stylish little dress. At the same time the mystery of Alexiaâs father and the God-Breaker curse unravels even more, leading Alexia and Connall to Egypt to follow in her fatherâs footsteps.
A twist Gail offers in this final book is a second narrator: Biffy. I wonât say much of his story, only that we get to see an awful lot of him; his perspective is very well written, intriguing, and exciting; and he carries the story as it continues in London after Alexia leaves for Egypt.
All the other characters you love appear as well: Madame LeFoux and the Countess Nadasday; Beta werewolf Lyall and the ever-charming, ever-annoying gama Channing; Ivy and her husband and children; and of course the ever-reliable, ever-mysterious Floote.
Pushing the boundaries of her world and story farther than before, Gail pushes her characters to reveal more and grow more, until by the end she has almost turned her world on its endâbut in a good way. There is good fun and laughs as usual, but Timeless also offers some intense scenes and even some tears from the reader. Not everyone is left unscathed as they have been in the past four books, and the coming future for all Gailâs characters is irrevocably changed by the end events of this book.
A thrilling and laugh-worthy addition to Gailâs world and series, Timeless is the perfect end to Alexiaâs adventures, and the best beginning for Prudence and all the others.
