2011 Favorites #12: One of Our Thursday’s is Missing by Jasper Fforde
Jasper Fforde’s exuberant return to the fantastical BookWorld opens during a time of great unrest. All-out Genre war is rumbling, and the BookWorld desperately needs a heroine like Thursday Next. But with the real Thursday apparently retired to the Realworld, the Council of Genres turns to the written Thursday.
The Council wants her to pretend to be the real Thursday and travel as a peacekeeping emissary to the warring factions. A trip up the mighty Metaphoric River beckons-a trip that will reveal a fiendish plot that threatens the very fabric of the BookWorld itself.
Once again New York Times bestselling author Jasper Fforde has a field day gleefully blending satire, romance, and thriller with literary allusions galore in a fantastic adventure through the landscape of a frisky and fertile imagination. Fans will rejoice that their favorite character in the Fforde universe is back.

Entry 95: NaNo Week 1
This week was one ball of craziness. First, NaNoWriMo started this week and I am up to a total word count of 17,667. Woot woot! Second, classes were strangely busy this week too. In my Book Editing class we were assigned our “Developmental Edit” and I spent a good chunk of the last few days reading the entirety of the 300-page manuscript (I’ll explain more in a sec). And third, I’ve been trying to sort out work schedules lately (since I now have three jobs, two paying). Blech. I start at Macy’s at 6:30 AMtomorrow.
Books I read this week: Mr. Monster and Siren Song.
So as attested by my word count, NaNoWriMo has been going well. I’m feeling a little bit of that: I’m a terrible writer and this is crap. So I’m going to post what I’m writing as I go, so you can tell me: no you’re wonderful, keep going! Ah the wonders of unconditional support. It’s amazing sometimes. But anyway. I am excited to keep writing, though my muse keeps wandering off and thinking about other projects. So far she hasn’t actually cheated on Midwinter’s Eve so we’re good for now.
Back to that whole “Developmental Edit” thing. Let me define this: a developmental edit is when you read a manuscript looking to improve the plot, characters, conflict, setting, etc. It’s not about the grammar or the spelling, but making the story as good as it can be. I can’t really say a whole lot about the manuscript we’re working on, in respect to the author, but I can give a few details. It’s a cop drama (female protagonist), about messing up, your life falling apart, and trying to put it back together. There’s a little bit of action, a little bit of romance, and a lot of introspection. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but the first few chapters really sucked me in. Now I am about three weeks ahead on this project. It’s nice to not be a procrastinator.
Book-related events of the week:My mom went got our copy of The Hunger Games stamped by Suzanne Collins. I am jealous that it was my mom who got to meet her, but again it was one of those signings and no readings kind of events, so I’m not too terribly heart broken. I am excited to see the stamp though.
I’ve been finding out that many new novels will be coming out this March! Hooray! These include: One of Our Thursdays is Missing, Demon Song, and I Don’t Want to Kill You. The last two relate to the books I read this week, as they are the continuations of those series. More hooray!
On a final note. It is officially autumn. The leaves are down, it’s raining, and it’s cold. Yay.
